recent article by Manila Times
reporter Maricel Cruz states that former representative Mark Jimenez may
be eyeing a return to Philippine politics with a planned run for mayor
of Manila after his two-year sentence is up.
For many Filipinos who
already find the country's current political climate quite distasteful,
the return of Estrada's main political operator may signal even worse
days ahead. Jimenez--formerly known as Mario Crespo, is currently
serving a two-year sentence in the United States, having been indicted
on 47 counts of tax evasion and mail fraud.
To the millions of Filipinos who
rallied during EDSA Dos and risked life and limb to rid the country of a
corrupt and incompetent president, it behooves the current
administration--an administration that owes it very existence to that
event--to make sure that remnants of that discredited administration be
prevented from again grabbing hold of the reigns of power, be it as a
lowly Baranggay Captain, a City Mayor, or an elected legislator.
This may be difficult for Gloria Arroyo
who as vice president was known to sometimes meet with Jimenez. But the
country must come before family and friends, more so now than ever
before when the Philippines seems to be headed towards a precipice,
economically, politically, and socially.
