f there is one person who
continues to wield a lot of clout in Philippine politics, it is former
president Fidel Ramos.
Politicians,
the press, and the Military hang on to his every word, as though his is
the final word on political matters. Former presidents Cory Aquino and
Joseph Estrada have already made it clear that they are for the
resignation of current President Gloria Arroyo, however, their
coalition--if one can call it that--does not get past the "starting gate"
without the nod of approval from Fidel Ramos.
Ramos' larger-than-life political stature
seems to be borne from his standing-up to his former "boss" strongman
Ferdinand
Marcos, as well as his highly effective and pragmatic term as president.
The former General also continues to command the respect and loyalty
of the military in a way that a civilian never could.
They question foremost on the minds of
many is can the retired General gingerly coax the political process
towards his parliamentary scenario before things begin to spin out of
control? From the perspective of Filipinos overseas, the country is in
dire need of a prudent, sensible individual who can shepherd the country
past all the hysterics and "Chicken Little" politicians who incessantly
cry out that the sky is falling! So far, "Steady-Eddie" Ramos seems to be
playing his cards just right.
