or Filipino-Americans, especially those living in the the East and West
coasts of the United States, Canada is seen as the country that usually
gets it right! From universal healthcare, to universal education, to
"universal" tolerance for all peoples and races.
It comes as a shock therefore to read about
Luc Cagadoc a seven-year-old
Filipino child being reprimanded in school for eating the way most
Filipinos do; with a spoon and fork!
The
embarrassed and confused second grader whose family recently migrated to
Canada from the Philippines would be made to sit away from other kids
during mealtime and told by school officials that his use of a spoon was
disgusting.
When the child's mother Maria Gallardo, called the school to complain
about her son's mealtime treatment,
Normand Bergeron, the
school's principal told her that her son ate like a pig. All because he
would use a spoon and not just a fork like everyone else.
The
administration of the Roxboro school, in the Canadian Province of Quebec,
should be brought to task and made to explain their actions which smacks
of racism, intolerance and and an appalling ignorance of different
cultures--in this case, the Filipino Culture.
The Philippine ambassador to Canada, along with his consuls and
attachés
need to get on the ball posthaste and make known to these Quebec school
officials that we Filipinos will not tolerate our culture being
maligned this way.

UPDATE:
The Philippine Star 05/04/2006
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said yesterday the Philippine
embassy in Canada fully supports the action taken by the Filipino
community in Montreal and the parents of the seven-year-old Filipino
pupil who was allegedly punished for his table manners.
Foreign Affairs spokesman Gilberto Asuque said in a press briefing that
Ambassador to Canada Jose Brillantes submitted a report to the DFA on
the incident that happened on April 11, which the diplomatic mission
considers an "affront" to Philippine culture and plain racial
discrimination...
Brillantes said the embassy is fully supportive of the moves of the
Filipino community and the student’s mother to protest against the
teacher’s actions.
"Buo ang suporta ng embassy sa ginagawa ng association sa Canada na
laban sa discrimination sa isang Pilipino. Nasa likod ang suporta ng
embassy upang itama o iwasto ito (The embassy fully supports the actions
of the association in Canada against the discrimination of a
Filipino. The embassy backs moves to correct or remedy this)," Asuque
said.
