he
legendary German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck once remarked, “There are
two things you don’t want to see being made—sausage and legislation.”
In
the Philippines, opposition legislators, are involved in an even more
nauseating endeavor known as "demolition politics." In it, opposition
Senators and Congressmen use their congressional immunity to hurl one
baseless accusation after another against the President in the hope that
one of those accusations might stick and create a People Power-like
uprising that would bring down her administration. Their accusations can
be as outrageous and as far-fetched as they dare to make them since they
(the accusers) cannot be held accountable in Philippine courts.
Case in point: Philippine news dailies recently reported on the
allegation by Taguig-Pateros Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano that the First
Family has a secret bank account in Hypovedreins Bank in Munich,
Germany. Cayetano even supplied the account number
87-570-23030-32100-62771571, and challenged First Gentleman Jose Miguel
Arroyo to prove that the account was not theirs. Mr. Arroyo accepted the
challenge and told Cayetano, he was willing to accompany the Congressman
and his witnesses to the German bank.
In
spite of the political "zarzuela" (theatrics) that may play out in
newspapers and television news shows over the next few days or weeks,
the opposition will quickly realize that this baseless accusation will
"die on the vine" just like all the previous accusations and impeachment
complaints that came before it. The reason is this: Filipinos are simply
tired of People Power-type uprisings! It was great when it happened the
first time, tolerated when it happened a second time (to correct our
collective 'lapse in judgment'), but likely to become an embarrassment
if it happens a third time.
So for now, anxious Filipinos the world over need not fret. Their
country remains stable and in capable hands.
