NewsLink has been closely following the upcoming mid-term elections. Many Filipino-Americans will go to the polls on November and cast their
ballots as one of the largest minority communities in the United States.
While many of the more "enlightened"
kabayans living on the East or West coasts traditionally vote for
Democrats, the vast majority of small-town USA Pinoys seem to favor the
GOP. But with the disastrous war in Iraq, the anti-immigrant initiatives
of the Conservative Right, and the Mark Foley scandal, one wonders if
the tipping point has been reached for this group to go Democratic this
time around.
Unfortunately, for some
Filipino immigrants, taking a tough stance and standing to the right of
the average American Conservative is seen as a way
to ingratiate
themselves with mainstream America; never mind that the war on
terror has been bungled so badly by the Bush Administration, and
thousands of young Americans have lost their lives in Iraq.
The latest polls indicate a Democratic
majority gaining control of Congress this November. If that happens, it
should help curb the excesses of the Bush Administration and bring back
the checks and balances so essential in a democracy. Let us hope
Filipino-American voters do their part in making this happen.
