Is the Philippines Prepared for a Japan-like Disaster?

he destructive earthquake and tsunami that struck Northeastern Japan on Friday made us all sit-up and take notice. A man stares at the total devastation before him caused by the Japan TsunamiThe heart-wrenching scenes of devastation and mayhem from one of the richest and most advanced countries on earth, raises concerns of how prepared the Philippines is to handle a similar calamity. Mother Nature after all is constantly reminding us that she is in control. And with the Philippines located along the geologically active "ring of fire," a similarly devastating catastrophe could befall it.

The country's most populated region, the National Capital Region (NCR) is thankfully located on the Western coast of Luzon and faces away from the active Pacific Plate. However, provinces along the East coast from Cagayan to the North, to Davao to the South, face the open ocean and the very active Pacific plate.

A calamity such as that which befell Japan will undoubtedly cause hundreds of thousands of fatalities should it happen in a densely populated area in the Philippines. Disaster control and rescue operations would soon be overwhelmed and the country's relatively small economy may not be able to withstand such a shock.

Being a highly superstitious country, many will see such a catastrophic event as the wrath of an angry God and blame themselves for that anger. The more circumspect would also blame themselves, but for altogether different reasons. They would blame themselves for allowing the country's population to have balooned out of control. They would blame themselves for turning a blind eye to the squalid and overcrowded living conditions of the poor in many cities. Hundreds brave the flood waters of Typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana) in Metro ManilaThey would blame themselves for the lack of planning, equipment, and resources allotted for disaster preparedness. And they would blame themselves for allowing corrupt government officials to pocket the billions of pesos that should have gone into building a stronger, more robust country.

The Philippines has so far dogged the bullet. And recent calamities like the flooding from typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana) and the mudslides from typhoon Pepeng (Parma) highlight the resilient nature of Filipinos. We are a hardy and resourceful people. In the face of adversity, we get right back up and move on. That said, we Filipinos still could use some help. We need government to provide proper direction and guidance. We government to de-populate overcrowded cities. We need government to strengthen building codes. We need large flood prevention projects implemented and properly maintained. We need government leaders who look after the welfare of their constituents and not just after their own welfare.

Until the Philippines can make those changes, a disaster of the scale that hit Japan will undoubtedly be more devastating than necessary. This is a wake-up call, Filipinos need to roll-up their sleeves and really get serious about this. We may not have much time! Join our survey (click here).

Love Pilipinos but I dislike the the corrupt hypocrites that run the country. There is no way that the Philippines is in anyway prepared for a Japan like natural disaster. For anybody to think that the government has any kind of plan to handle situations like those in Japan is fooling themselves. it is not a question if the Philippines will suffer a Japan-like disaster, it is a question of when it will happen. God help the Pilipinos when the that day or reckoning comes.

Reminder to Filipinos in the USA with expiring credits on their prepaid phone cards>> you can use those amounts-- $10 each time, to text your donations to relief efforts in Japan. Send donations to Red Cross by texting "redcross" to 90999, and/or to UNICEF by texting "japan to" 864233. Red Cross accepts up to $20 in text donations while UNICEF accepts up to $50. Sana ay ipakita naman ng mga Filipino na Filipinos are willing to help in any way they can these countries who have helped the Philippines in the past. Para hindi naman isipin ng ibang bansa na puro na lang tayo "palimos nga diyan".

Poor people from the Philippines will survive the tsunami particularly the starving children, for them everyday of their lives they are in survival mode. Those rich corrupt politicians and their children will not because Satanas will claim them.

NO they will never BE prepared nor ready. , those in charge cant make any decisions,, just there own interest..( Example LOOK at the recent AIR CON outage. had they bought/purchased a well-named unit maybe there would have been no failure..) When the next 1 comes it will be like 1990 but much more worse. Hopefully we will not have a tsunami for the MM area. This time we will not have the Americans to help us out as they did in 1990.

Re: Is the Philippines prepared for a Japan like disaster? The 8.9 earthquake which hit Japan left several cities completely destroyed because of the Tsunami which followed the quake after about half an hour. There was a headline in the LA Times that the total dead might exceed 10,000.. bodies are still being counted. Japan is one of the richest nations, it has experienced big earthquakes but notwithstanding their advance planning the total death due to Tsunami is staggering. The Ph in terms of preparedness is obviously falls short and is unprepared for a similar disaster.. The good thing is that there will be no Nuclear disaster because we don't have any in PH.

The Phils is included in the Ring of Fire in the Pacific Ocean. Right after New Zealand's earthquake, Japan had a full scale jolt at 8.9RS followed by more than 3 billion cubic yards of water (tsunami). The prediction that one day the Phils will experience the same is a big possibility indeed. The worst may yet to come & it's inevitable. The Phils should then learn from the Japanese & other experts world-wide on how to deal with this natural geologic force. A thorough study of this catastrophe must be examined from every angle & every scale. Good lessons can be learned & the Phils can then calibrate & prepare how best to respond & deal with the next big one on a grand scale.

Absolutely we the human beings can not contain nor resist Mother Nature especially when man is on the path of the wrath of its fury. Yes man can predict its coming but there are many times man can not predict it. Japan, a very advanced country and as techno-equipped as it is could've at least minimized the human toll on its people but it is very clear to see that scientific equipment was no match to its task in forecasting MN's coming and so was not able to give out warning in a timely manner.

There’s no means for survival if the same calamity happened in Japan came to us. We perished, we are saved that time we are all helpless. No material things can bring us to salvation if it meant that’s the end it is destiny that’s it. At my end Philippine Government could not withstand such catastrophe; Philippine treasury is drained by previous administrations for long time it will take many decades if not century to surface. If and when it happen sorry for my term “kanyang buntot kanyang hila sytem na lamang” In God’s will it won't happen again not only to our country but globally. Prayer is the sole refuge.

The Philippines is actually ill-equipped in the event of a major disaster like a tsunami or major earthquake of that magnitude (8.0 and above). Many will die and millions will lose their homes and livelihoods. There will be massive floods, spread of disease, and there will be food shortages as well as rolling power blackouts. The rich will just continue on to live as they live without a care and they will continue to steal and rob the country of it's vital resources. One day, when that day comes, the rich will suffer the ultimate because "what goes around comes around". Only then will the rich fear GOD.

As much as the Philippine Gov't. gives more focus on updating if not modernizing PAGASA's weather forecasting tools & equipments., it should also give more emphasis on a very strict implement of existing laws/code on safety, building permit, bidding of public works (such as roads & highways, bridges, canals,) auditing rules as to the kind & strength of mtls. used on this public infras. Also our concern on PLDT & other public utility companies' unsafe practices on diggings/wirings on city streets, posts, etc., fire code, laws on public trans (air & sea travel, etc). Violators should be meted out the highest fines & penalties. In our country potential man-made calamities are just lurking around the corner and in fact we are quite often visited by these. SAFETY should be everyone's business!

The Philippines is not prepared on anything. You can see how primitive their ways of saving the victims of our past calamities. We have to depend on other friendly countries for money , food and clothing for the victims if ever those reach them.

The best way to be prepared for tsunami, if you are in sea level flat island like Mactan island, Philippines, is to have with you a back pack containing a personal floatation jacket, & inside one of its pockets, incased in a waterproof plastic is a personal GPS satellite tracking device and extra battery, and attached to the floatation device is a floatable container of water ration for a few days and food pills, and a self inflating light personal life raft. All these can go in a single normal size backpack. You might even finagle a light telescopic rod to which you can attach a material u can hold up as a sail, cover with, or used to draw attention of search planes, ships & helicopters.

The Filipino people should expect their government to take care of them if a crisis of this magnitude were to hit any part of the Philippine Islands. I am US Military and was there to assist with Typhoon Megi in Northern Luzon. The Filipino people are a great, kind, caring people and I am glad we were able to assist. If anything like this disaster were to hit any part of the Philippines I know the US would be the first to assist again with airlift and conduct a Humanitarian operations. I was there during Typhoon Megi working for the US Embassy and found myself in Northern Luzon directing US Airlift within 12 hours of the typhoon. Our two nations share such a strong bond that the Filipino people know the US would be there to assist until the crisis was over.

In 1991 when Dagupan City was hit by 7.7 magnitude earthquake. There were no reported dead, concrete bldgs never collapsed, it simply shrunk due to liquefaction, now, take a closer look what happened to New Zealand, Bldgs totally collapsed due to faulty structural design? Resulting to death of many civilians including Pinoys! Australia was hit by unexpected floods!; Japan was hit by unexpected Earthquake & Tsunami including damaged nuclear reactor! Now, one big question here is, If California was hit by strong earthquake due to “San Andes fault,” what’s going to happen? Don’t single out the Philippines; simply look around your place! California isn’t exempted from Disasters! Aren't you getting tired trampling upon and hating the Philippines?

The disaster in Japan is a wake-up call in the Philippines, business not usual anymore. Filipinos abuses the eco-system for many years and I won't be surprised that the entire archipelago will be under the ocean if we don't change how we treated our resources. Yes, Philippines is not ready by any means, Mother Nature is just waiting her revenge.

Well, a crusading PNL is not trying to put a strawman: attacking the real issue---which is to make the Filipinos around the globe literate & empower the less-fortunate Filipinos by giving them a public forum or a voice. If majority of the Filipinos feel that they have a strong motivation to challenge the status quo, they will feel well-informed. In other words, they will feel stronger; they won't feel denied. And they can make a difference.

I have read postings that Japan has turned down PH on the offer to send a rescue team to Japan. It's either the news I have read is late or someone is jumping the gun. Japanese ambassador Makoto Katsura indicated to P-Noy that he is still awaiting word from Tokyo on modalities (see LA Asian Journal week end edition March 19-22). 1 UP, I need to know where you got your news? In the event our offer is declined, I don't see this as a rebuff as there are numerous countries (last count was 91) that are in line to extend their hands. I hope PH is not doing this so they could LOOT! (joke only!)

The overall situation in Japan remains very serious & critical. The grim realities are: contaminated vegetables, milk, & water are now reported to have high levels of radioactive iodine (131). With 350,000 homeless & an estimated 21,000 dead or missing, this is the worst atomic crisis in Japan ever. It's very disturbing that Japanese from far flung places are now barely surviving. Most of them are homeless with very low food supply. Shoppers must queue for 2 to 3 hours, can only buy 10 items or less, & must pay cash. It's a dilemma for most people cuz cash machines are not working. Japan needs all the help & assistance from everybody. Our donations can make a big difference.

I have my doubts that PH is prepared to meet catastrophic disasters: (1) there are some 12 million people (47 K in one square mile) residing in NCR and it's humanly impossible to move them fast enough when tsunami strikes (2) the structural strength of buildings are doubtful if they could withstand quakes with a magnitude > 8.5 . I believe the building code is for about magnitude 8 only. (the 8 may even be 7 when retested) There are not enough trees that could break the energy of tsunamis once they hit the shores.(3) not enough food, water, medicines, for this volume of people in catastrophic disasters. (4) not enough budget for the government's emergency management agency (5) not enough elevated places to run (mountains, hills, etc). Dahil shortie si Gloria, she will be one of the first to drown.

RE: Japan not accepting offer of PNoy to send Phil volunteers to help in Earthquake disaster.. The Japanese Ambassador apparently informed Pres. Noy that before they will accept, the Japanese government wanted to be sure that the Phil group is self sustaining and have complete equipment. They don't want volunteers who will ask the Japanese gov't; we need this we need that.. In other words if you want to help you have to bring everything including enough tools and equipment and that you won't ask anything from the Japanese.

In the Philippines during the time of calamities and disasters, some people get a handful of relief rather than those needy ones. Most of the time you will find it in groceries as one way of converting it into cash or sometimes the donations will go directly into the pockets as if it didn't exist. Heartless people really do feast like vultures during tragedies.
