What If Like Qaddafi, Marcos Had Been Captured and Killed During EDSA... Would We Have a Different Philippines Today?

he horrific images of the Libyan dictator dead or dying in the streets of Sirte brings a degree of closure to the Libyan uprising that the EDSA People Power Revolution never had. Screen capture of a bloodied Muammar Gaddafi laying in a street of his hometown of Sirte shortly after he was killed by Libyan rebelsThanks to Uncle Sam's well-intentioned meddling, the Filipinos only got as far as ransacking Malacañang, stomping on portraits of the dictator Ferdinand Marcos and his wife Imelda, and feasting on left-over caviar found on the palace dining room table.

The hypothetical question we ask is this: would the Philippines be a different country today if Marcos was captured and killed during EDSA? In our opinion we think things would be very different today if that had happened. It would have brought justice and well as closure for the thousands of innocent Filipinos who were raped, tortured, abused, incarcerated, or killed for no other reason than their opposition to Marcos. It would have also brought justice to the millions of Filipinos who were forced to give up their  freedoms and rights so that Marcos, Imelda and their circle of cronies would have the power to loot and plunder the wealth of the country.

If Marcos was killed during EDSA, there would probably never have been the lavish Boracay Mansion that Former President Joseph Estrada is alleged to have owned, or the electoral fraud of the Hello Garci scandal, or the million-peso kickbacks for the proposed NBN-ZTE deal, or the widespread corruption and thievery that exists in every nook and cranny of Philippine society today.

In that alternate world of what could have been, the Philippines might have become a leader in Southeast Asia with a first-world economy. Instead here we are—a decade into the new millennium—a third-world country, up to our eyeballs in corruption, largely ignored by most nations and blacklisted by many others.

It could have been a historic & dramatic transition had Marcos suffered the same fate as Col. Gadhafi of Libya. Just remember that many Filipinos have lost their lives & illegal detention under the brutal rule of a corrupt leader, his cronies, the oligarchs, & his clan. Had they bomb the palace, we won't have a senator, a governor, & a congresswoman alive & kicking today...the son, the daughter, & the wife of a tyrant but Uncle Sam orchestrated the exit & eventual exile of the Marcoses out of the country. End of story.

Moammar Gadhafi shot in the head by a Libyan rebel with his own golden gun. This is the fate a big sanamagan, sanamabit dictator. This should have been the fate of Makoy if he did not flee to Hawaii. And to think that his family have the temerity to demand for a hero’s burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani or elsewhere with full military honors. Ang kakapal talagaaaa @#$%$#@!

If the mob would have killed Marcos what would have been different? The Philippine would be much the same as it is now. At that moment in time who would have replaced him. Remember a president of the Philippine is BACKED by the military. You would have had a general and things would have been worse. Remember this, what monies did the government ever recover from the Marcos. Next to nothing. Imelda and her son went on to become elected officials. You see to have a changed country it's people have to change and the Filipino people like the status quo.

Well, funny thing is Imelda is still here. Not in prison but elected as Senator. Her son is even a congressman; and they have been trying to request a national hero burial for Marcos. Compare to Quaddafi, they are lucky to be borne as Filipino. Only in this country can the corrupt be hailed and respected for their power and scam. Is that our heritage after "slaved" by the Spaniard for 300 years?

As I have been posting before, the Marcoses are very rucky. The rove the firipino peopor and a first rady who roves the firipino more. That's why, inspite of all what they have done to the Philippines, they are still elected by the people. They should have been shot or hanged after the 1986 people power. Now still, they are making noises. They even want their father to be honoured and be buried at LMB. C'mon, P-noy, make your move. Their cases had been in the Sandigan Bayan for decades and nothing is being done. Put them in jail too.

You asked if the mob would have killed Marcos the victims of his crimes they would at least received justice. You can still get justice, take the monies and property from the Marcos family. Go after the PC commanders and their men who murdered and raped. Go after Marcos's closest advisors who also stole. It's still possible. BUT, the problem is, is that many of the people in high government places are still in office. Them and their families. So this editorial like most on this site, are just WHAT IFs.

A bigot and biased PNL editor asks, "what if like Qaddafi, Marcos had been captured and killed during Edsa, would we have a different Philippines today?" The one-sided editor answered his own question: "there would probably never have been the lavish Boracay mansion that Erap is alleged to have; no Hello Garci election rig, no NBN-ZTE bribery." And if I may add, most likely there would never have been Hacienda Luisita massacre, no Mendiola carnage, no foreigners gunned down. There would be no 23 crates of dollars, 9 container vans of gold bullions, and 1.5 dozens of golden toilet bowls stashed away to Hawaii. And Bongbong would never have been elected as senator! And all Pinoys would have lived happily ever after, amen!

If the mob had caught up with the Marcoses in Malacañang there might have been no Congresswoman Imelda, Governor Imee and Senatong Bongbong. I am sure the mob would have given them the Romanov treatment given by the Russian revolutionaries to the Czar of Russia and his family.

The world praised us Filipinos for the non-bloodshed EDSA revolution which toppled the Marcos Regime. We Filipinos are God fearing - loving and forgiving people. What we have to correct is the rampant corruption in our government. Peace, kabayan.

RE: Marcos ... Why do you think FM and some of his cronies left the P.I.? Had he stayed in Malacañang it would have been like the Bastille in France where the relatives of the Monarch were killed..FM knew if he didn't leave the P.I. Cory would have immediately solved the killing of Ninoy.. Look in EDSA II the moment ERAP saw on TV that General Angelo Reyes was in the Rally.. ERAP disappeared from Malacañang, That is why FM and ERAP were not slaughtered like Gadaffi

Considering that we are talking about FM,, Can anyone who reads this posting inform me whatever happened to Primitivo Mijares Jr..At the start of Martial Law he was among the very few people who could see FM without any appointment. Then 4 or 5 years into Martial Law he testified in Congress (U.S. Congress) and wrote a book The Conjugal Dictatorship..In 1976 he just disappeared from the face of the Earth..Mijares was at one time in LA and he was talking on the Phone with an Asst. of FM in Malacañang- DE La Vega..a few days after that Phone call.. Dela Vega was shot inside his office on Malacañang..

When Corazon Aquino was president, Fmr Dept of Justice Raul Gonzales was a prosecutor. Gonzales told president Cory that a witness had come forward to identify who the mastermind was behind Ninoy Aquino's assassination, but first she must be provided protection for herself and her three children. When Gonzales told president Cory that the witness said Eduardo Cojuangco was the mastermind behind her husband's assassination, president Cory refused protection for the witness. The witness disappeared thereafter.

Why do you think he declared Martial Law? Do you actually think all Filipinos were communists? That the country was overrun by rebels? Marcos and his cronies wanted to remain in power forever and steal every penny from the government. He is as ruthless as Khadafi and Saddam Hussein. By the way, although the hatred of Pinoys may have only intensified (Yankees go home!, remember that?), the scenario above by the editorial would not have had happened because the U.S. would spirit Marcos out of the country (as what happened) or the U.S. would have pulverized the "rebels" and the "EDSA I". History tells us Marcos lasted for almost 20 years as dictator because the U.S. propped him up. Clark AB may have poised its fighters and bombers against EDSA I. Wait for it (details) from Wikileaks.

The assumption of the PNL that if Marcos had been captured and killed by EDSA demonstrators the country would have been different. It would have been prosperous and be the number 1 in SE Asia. Let us examine the facts. The demonstrators were in EDSA to provide support to the "rebels" (Ramos, Enrile, Honasan et al). Marcos was not in Camp Aguinaldo but in Malacañang (Mendiola). If the angry mob was there, they could have stormed the Palace before Marcos sent distress signals to the US Embassy or even contacted Reagan. Those who went to storm the palace had no weapons - pitch forks or tabak. Many were looters and not not interested in capturing Macoy alive. For God's sake PNL people, stop second guessing! Don't hallucinate. Don't do a rewrite of history.

Yes certainly we would have a different Philippines today because I firmly believed that the next leader would not follow their example. But if we are going to base our understanding in the bible all these happens already written. As the bible says that God said I am going to send wars, diseases and famine. Do they think they go unpunished? They will be punished I the Lord have said. So its really hard to say if Marcos suffered the same fate with Gadhafi then we never know what is going to happen next.

I totally agree with this. Had the Marcoses suffered the same fate as their friend Qaddafi, there will certainly be closure on Ninoy's assassination, the rape, torture and death of thousands, the rape of the economy, etc. And we would not be toiling here abroad just so we can send our children to school. And here we are hearing Bongbong and Imee claiming that Noynoy is missing his chance for a reconciliation and key to move the Philippines forward. They must really think all Filipinos are stupid. Well, pardon me for saying this but, not all Filipinos are Ilocanos. I cannot comprehend why they continue to elect the Marcoses and at the same time complain how hard life is in the Philippines. The greatest mistake the country had was anointing Cory Aquino to save the country after 20 years of Marcos rule (9 years under martial law). The poor lady was unprepared to lead and rebuild the country from political and economic ruins. The son Benigno Simeon is following her footsteps after electing another Aquino again to rescue the country from a decade of disastrous rule by Gloria which has been marked by scandals and anomalies. These two Aquinos missed a golden opportunity to exhibit true leadership. Essentially the Filipino people are having more of the same but in different time frames.

EDSA1 was a bloodless revolution whereas Libya's revolution is practically a bloody civil war manned by rebels. Rebels are people who defies authority. When you defy authority you don't follow any laws established locally or internationally. The rebels in Libya just joined unofficially and not even listed in their armed forces. It is obvious that most are civilians without proper gears, no helmets or uniforms and bear footed or with sandals. How can you bring these rebels to court for human rights violation? Besides Libya placed a tag price on Gadhafy's head for $1 million dead or alive? If I were the one who put that bullet in his head, I would rightfully pursue for the reward! The guy holding the golden gun did it!

FOR CLARITY. More on the Predator drone, that flew from Italy for over 1,000 miles to Libya, piloted by an airman sitting in front of a computer in Las Vegas NV USA, that struck the lead vehicles of Gadaffi's 100 vehicle convoy with missiles, blocking the rest of the convoy, and allowing the French jets to more accurately guide their 500 Lb bombs on the rest of the convoy, which prompted a wounded/bloody Gadaffi to seek shelter in culvert under the road.

The civilans would not have succeeded if the military did not switch sides. When the military (and all of them) refused to obey Malacañang, that was a military uprising. Big difference than in the the case of qadafi where he still had loyalists with him. Filipinos are thinking animals and smart at that. Why die for a dictator?
