or “Kumander Dante” as he was more commonly known, the New People’s Army
established on March 29, 1969 marks its 46th year of existence.
From less than 40 founding
members and a handful of firearms, the NPA grew to over 26,000 members in the 1980s.
Today however the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) places NPA
membership at less than 5,000 nationwide. That number is expected to dwindle
even further as progress and education creep in to the far-flung towns and
barrios that were once breeding grounds for recruits.
The NPA and the Communist
Party of the Philippines (CPP) are intricately intertwined. The NPA serves
as the armed wing of the CPP, while the CPP serves as the NPA’s political
wing.
However, with the collapse
of the former Soviet Union in December 1991, and the overall abandonment of
Communist ideology by both the Russians and the Chinese, many have begun to
wonder whether the CPP-NPA has now lost its raison d'être.
Its detractors say that the
group is now nothing but terrorist organization bereft of any idealistic
underpinnings it once had. The NPA intimidate civilians and collect
“revolutionary taxes” from small business owners in places where they
operate. For several decades they have carried out assassinations as well as
indiscriminate bombings that have killed scores of innocent civilians.
The Philippine military has
spent hundreds of billions of pesos to battle the NPA. Hundreds of billions
that could have gone instead to education, housing, or other “worthier” causes.
Truth be told, one of the major reasons the Philippines is an economic
basket case today compared to its more progressive neighbors is because it
has wasted too much time, resources, and manpower (including thousands of Filipino
soldiers killed) to fight the NPA.
Today the Philippine military can
hardly stand up to outside aggression in the West Philippine Sea because it is
exhausted physically as well as financially battling the NPA
and all manner of rebel groups and bandits operating in various parts of the
country.
Military officials allege
that China has been secretly supplying the NPA with modern high-powered
weapons. Whether true or not, any outside force that wants to keep the
Philippines weak and compliant need only fund groups like the NPA to achieve
those aims.
Thus despite their
vociferous proletarian chants or their chest-pounding displays of
nationalism, the CPP-NPA are in reality extremely anti-Filipino. Their very
existence is tied to holding back Philippine progress.
In a March 28, 2011
interview, the late Lee Kuan Yew noted that Singapore was able to achieve
tremendous progress because despite being made up of different races and
religions, they were “one society.” He then added: “If you’re fighting each
other all the time, how can you get progress?”
If you think about it, that
simple phrase makes a lot of sense. So next time you wonder why the
Philippines has fallen so far behind, think about the NPA and groups like
them. Despite the best efforts of resourceful, hardworking Filipinos, those
terrorist organizations play a big part keeping the country poor and backward.
The only way to deal with
the CPP-NPA is to crush it completely. Sadly that seems way too much to ask
of this present yellow-bellied administration. They will never have the
guts (or be man enough) to do it.

There Will Never be Lasting Peace with the Bangasamoro Basic Law
