The greatest democracy on earth is in a state of paranoia. While we believe that our government is our prime protector and benefactor when we need it, it can also be our worst enemy by removing our rights as free citizens. Having guns in our hands is not the main problem; it is the fact that the 2nd amendment is being carried too far by certain factions and groups and it being taken advantage by mentally and morally deranged individuals with all kinds of ill motives to bring damage to others. We are a nation of confused ideas about what freedom and democracy really means.

Well, at least in the USA, they are able to trace the bullet to the gun owner
and eventually, identify the shooter. We do not have this kind of gun control in
the Philippines where motorcycle riding gunmen have killed many Filipinos and go
scot free preparing for the next kill.

Why did you feature this event in the Philippines? What has this got to do with us? We've got so much problem in our country. Are you running out of editorials?

Re: Orlando mass shooting: "In most countries all over the globe gun slaying is just a small fraction of the crimes" ...You can't compare the the U.S. with most countries because they don't have the 2nd Amendment Right.. the right to bear arms. Here in America gun sales in the USA increased a lot because there is a fear that Pres. Obama will confiscate their guns. Obama won't be President in another 6 months. I give the 2nd
Amendment just a decade..Before the decade ends gun laws will change so that only legitimate hunters can own hunting guns..

PNL, Allow me to quote you. "The National Rifle Association (NRA) today holds a lot of clout only because a large number of Americans believe in its pro-gun agenda." My reaction: I am proud to say i am one of them. Guns don't kill people. People kill people.

There is huge difference between gun ownership in the US and in the Philippines. In the US, gun ownership is a right protected by the constitution (the right to bear arms). In the Philippines gun ownership or the right to carry guns is a privilege extended to protect certain sectors of society like cashiers, tellers, doctors, lawyers, CPAs, even priests and journalists. Unfortunately there are no journalist in recent memory who died defending himself from an assassin. Proof is the Maguindanao massacre. There are some 4,000,000 licensed and unlicensed guns in the Philippines. Rebel groups have powerful guns and so do private armies of the Ampatuans and even the Cojuangcos. People who resort to extreme violence like the most recent Orlando shooting have mental issues. It goes without saying that the Ampatuans are sick in the head too. Private individuals buy guns for security or as a hobby. Political families amass guns for their private armies. The Ampatuans have an armory.

The Americans revere the ideas of their Great Founding Fathers [i.e., the authors of the American Constitution]. They take seriously the essence of the words in their Constitution: "No free man shall be debarred the use of arms within his own land [see the Virginia Constitution: Jefferson, 1776]. And Patrick Henry agreed about the importance of armed citizens: "Give me liberty, or give me death." Even Thomas Paine advocated the right of every religious pacifist to take arms
[Paine's pamphlet: Thoughts on Defensive War].

The right to bear arms is an inalienable right of every American citizen. This includes even possession of military grade weapons. In contrast to Filipinos, owning a handgun by an ordinary citizen is a PRIVELEGE but a God given RIGHT to the Ampatuans and other political families. Political families use their guns not to provide personal security but political security while in office. They intimidate and scare their constituents. We all saw that with the Maguindanao massacre. In the Philippines those who kill other people are driven by money or hatred. In the US those who kill other people are mentally sick.

I believed that there are as many unlicensed guns more than licensed guns in the Philippines. For that simple reason many homicides remain unsolved. Suko ang SOCO
in solving crimes.

[Someone from] Pangasinan, I don't want him to be hang on the gallows, it is just an expression of anger. I felt that he was just fooling the Filipino
suckers with those accusation to Digong. Compare the words he is saying now after the election, he turned 360 degrees by declaring that Digong is an honest man! Why? Nobody is paying him anymore? He can fool you but not me.

[Someone]: I understand your exasperation and frustration with this man from Taft, who comes from the state of California, an ex soldier from the Philippines and an NTC (National Teacher's College) alumnus. He uses a a lot of oxymoronic expressions like " conformist critic" " macro-micro approach" " bandit democracy", etc. He is attempting to project an erudite image. You are one of those who is unimpressed and so am I.

I share your views and all other misgivings that are yet to come with this in-coming president. The fear of 3.7 million voters who did not vote for this guy is that his reckless, off the cuff remarks, and irrational pronouncements could lead to consequences that might be felt even long after his term expires. He is no different from Trump . An ego maniac!

Why empires inevitably collapse by Rod Kapunan [Standard posted 6/18/16]. I think every student of political theory has to combine fundamental philosophical inquiry & historical scholarship in order to understand the complex assumptions & concepts that shape our modern world. I think Mr. Kapunan's
article will remain an important subject of historical controversy. It is
interesting to enter into his particular neck of academic woods. I think there
are people who still believe that "through imperialism, poverty would be
transformed into prosperity, the savage would be saved, superstition would
vanished into enlightenment.

This man from Taft Avenue is defending himself from his style of writing or prose from
the mercenary. He has to because he uses a language that is vague, confusing and
a lot of oxymoronic expressions instead of words and phrases that are direct and
concise. I too have difficulty following his train of thought.

[Someone]: The in coming speaker has spent much of his time in domestic matters. When the Secretary General of the UN speaks, that is not his opinion but that of the entire body. As future speaker you have to realize that when a resolution is passed that is not your opinion but of the body you represent. The gentleman from Davao doesn't know what he is talking about. The UN adopted a resolution on suspension and not abolition of the death penalty. There is no correlation or proof that death penalty deters crime. Ask God when he sent the Great Deluge!

According to outgoing president BS Aquino of the Republic of the Philippines, he will be remembered as a statesman by the Filipino voters for a very long time [see Editorial: The delusion of grandeur]. President BS Aquino's presidency can't be assumed as a manual for building good cities, good provinces, good nation.
Why? President BS Aquino is devoid of vision. He is not an excellent political
architect: "Where there is no vision, the people perish [Proverbs 29:18]."

Someone said the following, "Some critics & apologists of Red China conceive themselves as experts in world politics. However, the world itself remains a riddle, a puzzle or a mystery to be solved or interpreted." My reaction: See how fragmented your statement is. Perhaps your brain as well. You talk about critics and apologists of com-china, experts in world politics, Then you say the world remains a riddle, a puzzle or a mystery to be solved.... What is your point? Is it China or the World? You need to develop your writing skills. Because for now, I will give you an "E" for effort... and that's being kind and sympathetic to your pathetic state.

Someone said the following, "According to Communist Chinese, capitalism is theft, and yet, they practice its principles & they can't satisfy their thirst for greed in invading the entire Spratly islands." My reaction: Do you know your idol Duterte is more than willing to negotiate with the Chinese instead of using the international forum, opinion, and
judgment? Also, do you know your idol Duterte has no qualms in admitting himself as a socialist. You are a lost case.

I am not a scholar of penology. I can't defend every region of the "globus intellectualis."
Do I really need to go back to school because of your understanding of modern
penal issues is limited? I think every critic has a passionate zeal for
learning. Why not ask yourself a simple question: "Do you think the severity of
punishment is fitter for despotic regimes, whose fundamental principle is
terror, than for a democratic-republican [even in monarchy], whose spring is
honor & virtue?" Do we need an intellectual alchemy in this forum to grasp the
complex link between liberal democracy & penal discipline?

is not my idol. His political lineage is different than mine. But let tell you
though, this guy who is a Filipino Lawyer here in California has helped a lot of

It is true that China will never relinquish her claim of sovereignty over those islands in South China Sea. She would lose face and that is a big NO NO to Asian culture. She would never commit a repeat of history where she lost a lot of territories in the 19th century to foreign powers because she was poor, weak and helpless. NOT THIS TIME DUDE!

Professor R. David's article: Would Rizal have chosen federalism [see Inquirer] is an interesting subject for students of political theorist & ethnicity. The nature of federalism is always subject to radical debate [reflective & deliberate]. I think a federal system of government in the Philippines will cement the emergence of modern tribalism. The era of modernization is also being conceived as the resurgence of nationalism. "Nationalism under the cloak of federalism or regionalism is simply tribalism." The dynamism of the shared experience [i.e., the self-determination of Filipino Muslims should not be confused with the formation of nation-state] of the Filipino
Moros is conducive to federal form of government.
